“I’ve learned to stand up and speak up when I see another student bullying or saying inappropriate things about another student. I let them know the behavior is wrong and how it makes other students feel. I would recommend this program to others because by working together in our community, we can make a difference in the world.”
– Mikaela M.
Prior to the 2004-2005 school year, Weaver Elementary School offered a limited number of students the opportunity to serve in leadership positions through a traditional student council. The O.R.C.A. (Ownership, Respect, Commitment, and Attitude) Ambassadors Leadership Club was created by teacher Joseph Arias, Ed.D. to provide more students with leadership experiences. The name was later changed to “The Ambassador Program.”
The mission of the Ambassador Program is to provide an inclusive and safe environment that offers students leadership skills, opportunities and experiences that empower them to be life-long leaders.
Develop an understanding of the importance of effective human relations, valuing diversity, and practicing inclusion.
Attend and participate in sessions to build their skills, knowledge, and resources in the areas of Leadership, Communication, Team Building, and Community Service.
Apply their training to real world experiences that have a direct affect on both our school community and the community at large.
The Ambassador Program brings value to the entire school community by:
Providing positive role models
Promoting positive and healthy relationships
Creating a safe school culture and climate
14 Program Sessions
Community Service Jobs
School related jobs and committees
Weekly, Monthly, As Needed
Job Orientation and Training
Responsibility and Accountability
Community Service Projects
Support School Activities and Events
Students generally meet after school once a month from 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Core components of the program include: Advocacy, Bullying Prevention, Character Development, Communication, Conflict Management, Community Service, Human Relations, Leadership Development and Public Speaking.
The Ambassador Program has a unique and flexible approach regarding program design. Foundational components such as communication and conflict management skills, team building and community building remain consistent, however many sessions are designed to address the current needs of the students and school. This may be based on student or staff input, community partners and current events.
Each year the program has a theme which helps to guide and identify program content, guest speakers, activities, community service projects and field trips.
As student leaders, the Ambassadors strive to make a difference in the lives of others by actively participating in various community service “jobs” and projects. This allows them to put their leadership knowledge and skills into action.
School-wide community service projects are sponsored by the Ambassadors. The on-going theme of projects is “Weaver C.A.R.E.S.(Caring-Action-Responsibility-Empathy-Support) Campaign."
